Background
My name is Theo Jaffee. I’m an incoming freshman computer science major at the University of Florida. In addition to my hobbies of cooking, lifting, and gaming, I’m a lifelong reader - always striving to learn more about how the world works and what to do about it. My reading interests are broad, but some of the most important and enduring have been business, finance, and investing.
As a highly aspirational middle schooler in 2017, I decided to try my hand at the stock market. People I knew really seemed to use Snapchat a lot, and Bitcoin looked innovative and was rising quickly. Not wanting to miss out on these seemingly once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, I bought in - no research, no valuation, not a single independent thought. Both holdings fell by over half, and I panic sold at a huge loss. To put it frankly, the experience sucked, and it turned me off from investing for years afterward.
In 2020, home from school in the depths of the COVID lockdown, I discovered Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. Reading their writings completely upended what I thought investing was. Rather than chasing popular, high-priced glamour stocks, Berkshire Hathaway seeks out opportunities when nobody else is. Instead of buying companies with speculative possibilities of future growth, Berkshire looks for companies with a long history of success that is distributed to their owners. Most importantly, Buffett and Munger focus on rationality first and foremost - and make every single decision in light of that principle.
Inspired by Buffett, Munger, and humanity’s other great minds, I created Deep Wisdom to help people avoid the investing mistakes I’ve made. After several iterations and countless plans and struggles, Deep Wisdom is launching on Substack in July 2022.
What to Expect
DW is currently new and highly subject to change, but you can expect three general kinds of posts:
Short-Form Content: This can take many forms: a useful principle or mental model that helps guide my decision-making, a profile of a notable person, or just something I enjoyed learning and would love to share with my audience.
Book Notes: I read a lot. One thing I’ve learned from this is that good books should be re-read, and great books should be read again and again until they become cornerstones of your personal philosophy. Whenever I read a truly great book, I’ll share a summary, break down the key points, and add insights to apply the book’s message to your life or work.
Business Analyses: These will take a broad look at all parts of a company: its business model, strategy, history, management, financials, and finally, my estimate of its intrinsic value. Due to the intensive nature of these posts, they will be infrequent and for paid subscribers only.
I’ll be posting new articles 1-2 times per month, and likely increasing to more later on.
Subscribe to grow with me as an investor and as a thinker.
